About Us

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technology community, with more than 168,000 members across the world. The IET is a multidisciplinary professional engineering institution which provides a global knowledge network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology in the world.

 

The IET On Campus is an initiative run by students and for students to provide the skills and experiences needed in your future career. The IET On Campus gives an opportunity for students not only to learn but also connect with industries as well as other universities to broaden your world.

IET is an organisation that welcomes all engineers and scientists regardless of which engineering or computing fields they originated from. Our target as an organisation is to build a sense of community among all engineers and technologists to provide empowerment in terms of their career and to provide skills and experience which will greatly aid one’s ability to do better for the world of engineering and technology.

Aims of IET On Campus

  1. To promote IET among the UoSM students

  2. To establish networks with future employers and to make contact with local members in E&T related fields

  3. To provide another avenue for students’ exposure to all aspects of E&T matters through student membership benefits provided by IET

  4. To support students on their learning and future professional development through IET activities

  5. To assist the University of Southampton in promoting holistic education through the collaboration of IET Malaysia and its student chapters

  6. To outreach STEM education to the general public and youth through collaboration and rapport with other universities and organizations.

  7. Organise holistic events which are open to all and not just limited to that of the members for a wholesome student experience for all.

The Route to CEng is an event organised by UoSM IET On Campus to expose students on the importance of applying as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) via professional societies such as the IET. Our speakers will explain the preparations and process of CEng application and provide detailed insights of CEng during the talk. This event targets all university students from University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM), especially our UoSM IET On Campus’ members, which may be extremely beneficial for our members in the future. We are honoured to have to have Eur Ing. Ir. Victor Nagesparan of UCSI University and Ir Dr Zuhaina Haji Zakaria of UTM as speakers for the event and to share on the process and journey towards getting their CEng certification. 
 

Aircraft Workshop 2021

This event will be a joint event between UoSM IET On Campus, IMechE UoSM Student Chapter, UoSM Robotics Club, USM IET On Campus, and UTM IET On Campus focusing on the theme of aircraft. The topics covered will mainly be mechanics and avionics involved in an aircraft to provide all engineering participants with a greater understanding of how an aircraft operates with all the machineries. UoSM IET On Campus as the main organiser will lead in the proposal and general preparations of the event.

This event was part of Minggu Sains by Pusat STEM Negara in which UoSM IET On Campus has been offered and accepted to organise a Virtual Treasure Hunt for secondary students between age 13-17. The aim of the event is to spread awareness of STEM education and to provide a fun and engaging activity to students. This is to encourage students to think outside of the box when solving different types of puzzles/questions. This will help to improve student’s ability to be resourceful in solving problems and to make studying/learning a more interesting process. This event also aims to stimulate and nurture critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork among participants.

Pusat STEM Negara IET Virtual Treasure Hunt 2021

The Industrial Month is a one month long event where several companies are invited to give a talk on the work about a company as well as the mission and vision of a company. This event was organised with the aim of letting students know more about the different E&T companies and their working environment as well as to let students know more about the current market and technology trends and to provide students with an opportunity for an internship. This will allow students to gain valuable knowledge and experiences from actual working professionals who are experts in their own respective fields. We are honoured to have the following companies joining in as honorable speakers for our Industrial Month event: Aerodyne Group, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Agmo Studios, Vitrox, RS Components. 
 

Satellite Workshop 2021

The objectives of the event was to provide members with the opportunity to gain insights on the mechanics and functions of a satellite and to give a valuable hands-on experience of creating a machine prototype to participants in the form of a mini CubeSat consisting of Arduino Nano and various sensors. The event is also part of a pioneering initiative to promote UoSM Space flight Society’s long term goal of building an actual working CubeSat for launching to space. We are honoured to have Mr Goh Lian Ming, an alumni of UoSM and current satellite system engineer at AAC Clyde Space as well as the support from AestraX, a space start-up firm from Singapore. Mr Goh was invited as a guest speaker and officiated the event by sharing to the participants his experience working in the space industry as well as his journey working towards the space industry. Participants were then segregated into groups to carry out the respective hands-on exercises (Gyro sensor & Accelerometer) provided to them to ensure the correct setup and functionality of their CubeSat.

The webinar was organised to share with students on the life and journey after graduating from an engineering degree. The event aims to expose and provide guidance to students on the options and opportunities that lies after their academic journey and the different paths that they can take to achieve their goals. This event aims to enable students to have a better and clearer understanding of a career in engineering after graduation as well as the speaker sharing some career trends and some other interesting topics that are beneficial to all in pursue life after graduation in engineering. The webinar was conducted through zoom sessions where participants were given the Zoom ID and necessary information to join the webinar after they had registered using the link provided by IET.

IET National Virtual Treasure Hunt 2020

The aim of the event was to provide a fun and engaging activity to students who are currently studying at University level. This is to encourage students to think outside of the box when solving different types of puzzles/questions. This will help to improve student’s ability to be resourceful in solving problems and to make studying/learning a more interesting process. The event also aims to create rapport among other universities through the help and participation of other OnCampuses as well as with the goal of spreading STEM in the community as well as to encourage critical thinking, creativity, and teamwork among participants. 

 

Overall, the event has been well received by many who participated. Although it was not flawless, we have learnt a lot from it, and this will help to improve our planning and preparations for future events. 

IETxNEM Blockchain the Future Hackathon

The main purpose of this event is to allow students to learn about blockchain technology and experience a hackathon. Participants were introduced to blockchain technology by Mr Andy Roy Sian from NEM Malaysia and rapid prototyping by Mr Ivan Ling Ting Yang, Advisor of UoSM IET On Campus. Participants build a prototype to solve a problem using NEM’s platform and presented to a panel of judges including Mr Andy Roy Sian, Mr Ivan Ling Ting Yang and Dr. Khor Jing Huey, which is a lecturer in University of Southampton Malaysia. 2 Teams from UoSM won the first and second place and a team from UTM won the third place. A simple speech by our CEO Prof. Rebecca Taylor to end the event. 
 

IET Southern Technical Talk

The main purpose of this event is to to introduce the community with latest technology on thin film electronic and photonic devices, on smart meter architecture deployment and to encourage young engineers to be professionals. Professionals in the engineering industry namely Professor Harold M. H. Chong who gave a talk on Thin Film Semiconductors: Working with Thermal Process Boundaries and Mr Eur Ing Ir. Jimmy Fam Deng Fong who touched on topics like Smart Meter Architecture Deployment in Malaysia- Melaka state towards smart city as well as Adaptive Attributes towards Chartered Engineer in Industry 4.0 Environment. Audiences had the opportunity to listen firsthand to the experts and got to know about the latest insights on technology finds and the new job market of the future. At the end of the programme, the audiences had the chance to ask the speakers questions and finally University of Southampton CEO Prof Rebecca Taylor ended the programme with a wonderful speech. The speakers were given appreciation gifts and food. 
 

VR Workshop – MEDINI TECH TALK

The aim of the workshop is to promote fun learning of technology through providing opportunity for children and the public to experience hands on making of VR goggles. We collaborated with OneMaker in organising the VR Cardboard Workshop during the Medini Tech Talk event. The event was held at OneMaker Medini, Mall of Medini from 10.00am to 12.00pm. Participants were given a simple introduction on the concept of virtual reality before they proceed to making their own VR Cardboard. They then explore around with the goggles to experience how VR feels like. 
 

KenWood Factory Visit

The main purpose of this event is to allow students to witness and understand how robots and engineering has effect on current generation factory production lines. Participants were introduced to the company’s structure. They visited the production line which includes applying solder paste and SMT. Besides that, they were invited to witness state of the art machines that were newly introduced to the production lines. Not only that, but some lucky participants were also handed the chance to go through part of their employee’s training.
